What to Do if Your Car Starts Skidding

Front-wheel drive vehicles are better equipped to handle treacherous, slippery road conditions. It’s important to have tires in good condition with adequate tread to avoid skidding and losing traction altogether. But if you do find yourself in a skidding or spinning situation,  Lionel Firn, founder and instructor of Driver Skills driving academy, offers some pointers to regain control, and avoid getting into a car accident.

Watch out for ice.

Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn’t turn toward the direction you are skidding in. Instead, focus on one spot you want to go, and keep steering toward it. If driving a front-wheel vehicle, it’s also important to accelerate a bit to pull the vehicle out of the skid. However, acceleration is not recommended in a vehicle with rear wheel drive.
